HISTORY

The Republic of Malta is a group of islands (Malta, Gozo and Comino) in the extreme south of Italy in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea. With prime location of an strategic importance to the maritime trade routes, its history can be traced back for several millennia. Historical and archaeological findings indicate there are nearly 7000 years of history from the earliest inhabitants of the Maltese islands. After several invasions and conquests of various peoples and civilizations, like the Phoenicians, the Greeks (which were the first that gave the name of the island "Melite" meaning "sweet honey"), the Romans who changed slightly the name to "Melita ", the Ottomans and finally the British, Malta represents a source of many historical legacies and cultural crossroads. Its capital, Valletta, with an unique urban morphology, has been planned in a rectangular layout for easy movement and dates back to the XVI century. As a sovereign State, Malta is quite young and acquired its independence from Great Britain in 1964 (September 21) - the same year it joined the United Nations - and a decade later, it transformed into a parliamentary republic (December 13, 1974). The Malta Summit between former US President Bush and Premier Mikhail Gorbachev in December 1989 is considered a historical milestone because it was officially declared there that the Cold War ended. In 2004, Malta entered the European Union and in 2008 Malta adopted the Euro, thus substituting the Maltese Lira its currency. The country is therefore with deep roots in the past looking to the future with determination, proactivity and certainty for new conquests.
